Sun is shining, and lifeguards are nearby as children go down the slide into the lake below. The youth is hollering in joy as they splash around the roped section of the water. Sailboats, Kayaks, and Stand Up Paddle Boards are a scenic backdrop throughout Trout Lodge.
This is just another typical summer day. So grab your swimming suit, sunscreen, and sunglasses and come out and experience the excitement Trout Lodge offers.
It’s only 1.5 hours from Saint Louis, making it the perfect day trip with family and friends. View the different activities Trout Lodge has to offer below.
Lake Activities
Lake Activities

From Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend
During the summer at Trout Lodge, you can experience many of the lake activities they offer. This includes Kayaking, Sailing, Canoeing, and Stand Up Paddle Board. You can even rent a Jon Boat and Funyaks. It is a great way to try new things while discovering different skills and hobbies. The above rentals are included with admission into the facility.
When you are ready to take a kayak or sailboat, stand up, paddle board out on the water, just go to the boathouse, and there will be staff waiting to assist you. The staff at Trout Lodge will ask you to fill out your information on paper, including your choice of boat rental. If the boat you request is available, they will get the boat rental of your choice ready with instructions on how to operate it. Lifejackets are required on the water (or have been while I visited), making it a fun and safe experience for the whole family.
Swimming Beach

Summers at trout lodge are a magical experience that will make you want to come back for more!
Additionally, Trout Lodge has a designated swimming area with a beach-style entry with sand and a zero-depth entry. The water is clear if the weather is good (not raining the last few days)!
The swimming beach has a rope swing, slides, and (sometimes) inflatables allowing for hours of fun in the water. Furthermore, YMCA Trout Lodge has lifeguards on duty, adding to your and your children’s safety. However, it is still the parent’s responsibility to watch the children.
Pontoon Tours
From Spring to Fall, you can experience Pontoon Tours at Trout Lodge. On a Pontoon Tour, you will be driven around the lake, enjoying the gorgeous scenic views.
The tour is approximately 25 minutes long and is a great way to get out on the water and learn more about the surrounding area at Trout Lodge.
Fishing Tours
Are you interested in going fishing? At Trout Lodge, you can hop aboard the Pontoon boat and go on a 60-minute fishing trip!
Just stop by the Waterwheel Country Store to obtain a valid fishing license (if you don’t already have one). Furthermore, poles and lures are provided by Trout Lodge. Grab your fishing licenses and head on the water to test your fishing skills.
All Pontoon Tours and Fishing Trips require children 8 and under to wear a lifejacket (which can be provided at Trout Lodge). Furthermore, all children (14 and under) must be accompanied by an adult.
Summers at trout lodge are a magical experience that will make you want to return for more! A day at Trout Lodge can consist of swimming in the lake, sliding down, jumping off swings, and playing on the inflatables.
Rather you are swimming in the lake, trying sailing for the first time, or testing your balance on the Stand Up Paddle Board, you will have hours of fun at Trout Lodge. Lake activities are open from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. Although lake activities are not available all year round, the Lodge offers a variety of land activities, making it perfect for visiting all year round, which leads us to our next section!
Land Activities
There is much more to do at Trout Lodge besides swimming and boating. Trout Lodge offers various zip lines, balloon pop archery, ceramics, biking, disc golf, drum circles, hiking, horseshoes, paintball, riflery, and rocketry. These are only a few of the many activities they offer.
Offering a variety of activities allows you to choose what interests you most. Most activities are scheduled and may only be available on select days. Also, enrolling ahead of time is highly suggested, as spots fill up quickly.
Be sure to sign up for your desired activities before the day you arrive, or else you may not get into the activities you want. Schedules for the current and following week are posted on the Trout Lodge’s website. Below are several activities they offer at their facility.
Ziplining

Trout Lodge offers several ziplining options to choose from. The Gladiator Zip is just as it sounds, where you can joust your opponent. Then there is the Moonlight Zip, allowing you to zipline later in the evening at sunset. Trout Lodge also has the Water Blast Zip, where you get soaked with water while ziplining across.
These zipline activities are a great way to introduce you to ziplining, especially if you have never been before. They have knowledgeable staff who will guide you and your child across the line. Allowing for a safe and fun experience.
Archery

Archery is an exciting sport where you shoot arrows from a bow to hit a bullseye on a designated target. The YMCA Trout Lodge offers two types of archery: Standard Archery and Archery Balloon Pop.
Standard Archery is perfect if you have never shot a bow and arrow. Before starting, the instructor will guide you through holding, aiming, and hitting the bow and arrow.
It’s a great way to learn archery or to practice your aim. Furthermore, staff will guide you throughout the process, allowing for optimal safety.
Balloon Pop is an exciting way to play archery. Balloons are tied to the bullseye, and the goal is to pop the balloon. It may sound easy, but it’s more complicated if you’re new to archery.
Riflery & Shotgun
One thing I love about the YMCA Trout Lodge is its focus on safety throughout all its activities. Riflery may sound intimidating or dangerous, but they provide a safe experience.
They offer several different activities that allow you to try shooting a rifle or shotgun. We have a list of the different experiences below.
Air Rifle
Upon starting your session, an instructor will review how to use an air rifle gun and review safety procedures. You will get the opportunity to shoot a .22 caliber air rifle. An instructor will monitor and guide each person as needed.
Rifle Safari
Take your aim at the dangerous balloon animals. Rifle Safari is in a controlled environment providing optimal safety that allows the imagination to occur.
The activity’s theme is to pretend you are on an African Safari and that the balloon animals are your target. It’s a fun and safe way to practice your aim.
Shotgun Basics
This is an excellent intro to shooting a shotgun. With shotgun basics, an instructor will show you how to use a gun and review safety with you. After an overview, you can shoot clay pigeons as you practice your aim.
Once you feel confident, you should try skeet shooting, allowing a more challenging hands-on experience with a shotgun.
Skeet Shooting
Skeet Shooting is a fun and challenging way to practice your aim with a shotgun. If you have never used a gun, start with the Shotgun Basics listed above. Skeet Shooting is a great way to perfect your aim.
During this 2 hour session, you can hit clay pigeons as they fly across the air. Sometimes with two clay pigeons at a time! It’s a great way to challenge yourself while perfecting your aim.
Trap Shooting
Trap Shooting is also offered at the Trout Lodge. It’s a great way to test your aim as you try to hit all 5 clay pigeons as they fly right in front of you.
Hiking and Biking

Trout Lodge has you covered if you are interested in hiking or biking. You can go on a self-guided hike or opt for a group hike. If you are interested in hiking alone, grab a hiking map at the front desk and check-in for your safety. If anything happens on the trail, they will know to look for you if you don’t return after dusk.
If you feel more comfortable going on a group-guided hike, you’re lucky; several choices exist. One guided hike you can opt into is the Nature Hike. This is just as you would expect a one-mile scenic tour of the beautiful woods. Then there is the Night Hike, a one-mile hike except at night. Then you have the Geology Hike, a guided tour giving an overview of the geological history of Trout Lodge.
Another great way to explore Trout Lodge is by biking the premises. You can check out bikes at the boathouse during summer and at Hawkins Pavilion during winter. Once you check out the bike, you can take a ride around the premise, where you can enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful scenery while working out. It’s a win-win.
Arts and Crafts
Another significant aspect of the Trout Lodge is its wide range of arts and crafts. You can learn to make ceramics, jewelry, tie-dye, and more.
Most crafts and arts are at a designated time. Please check the YMCA Trout Lodge weekly schedule for a list of costs and times for each.
Equestrian Activities

If we haven’t listed enough activities, horseback riding, classes, and wagon rides are available. Allowing for a vast array of adventures for all lovers of horses. Below are a few equestrian adventures that the YMCA Trout Lodge offers. To see a complete list of experiences, please check out their website.
Bluff Trail Ride
The Bluff Tail Ride is one of the most incredible adventures they offer. It allows you to spend three hours on a horse while enjoying the Lodge’s gorgeous scenery.
On the Bluff Trail Ride, you ride on trails, logging roads, and to the bluffs. It’s a great experience, especially for those who LOVE horses.
Wagon Ride
Wagon Rides provide fun and excitement as you are hauled through the country roads on a 30-minute ride.
It’s a great way to take a break from all the activities and relax while enjoying the scenery! Additionally, the Wagon Rides are great for the whole family, including children of all ages.
Staying at the Lodge
With so much to do, it’s no wonder people spend an entire weekend or a week at the Trout Lodge. The Lodge offers a variety of overnight accommodations. Rather you are looking for a hotel-style experience or a cabin.
